Wheaten Terrier Dog Breed Puppy Ads
AKA:
Breed Group: Terrier Height Male: 18 to 19 inches
Breed Size: Medium Height Female: 17 to 18 inches
Breed Origin: Ireland Weight: 30-40 pounds
Appearance
A medium-sized, hardy, well balanced sporting terrier, square in outline. he is distinguished by his soft, silky, gently waving coat of warm wheaten color and his particularly steady disposition. The breed requires moderation in both structure and presentation, and any exaggerations are to be shunned. He should present the overall appearance of an alert and happy animal, graceful, strong and well coordinated.

Temperament
The Wheaten is a happy, steady dog and shows himself with an air of self-confidence. His is alert and exhibits interest in his surroundings, exhibits less aggressiveness than is sometimes encouraged in other terriers. Major Fault - Timid or overly aggressive dogs.

For show purposes, the Wheaten is presented to show a terrier outline, but the coat must be of sufficient length to flow when the dog is in motion. The coat must never be clipped or plucked. Sharp contrasts or stylisation must be avoided. Head coat should be blended to present a rectangular outline. Eyes should be indicated but never fully exposed. Ears should be relieved of fringe but never taken down to the leather. Sufficient coat must be left on the skull, cheeks, neck and tail to balance the proper length of body coat. Dogs that are overly trimmed shall be severely penalized.

History
Lydia Vogel of Massachusetts brought the first Wheatens to the United States in the 1940s. Real activity in the breed did not begin in this country until the late 1950s when the O'Connors and Arnolds imported their dogs. Wheatens were exhibited in the AKC Miscellaneous Class until October 1973 when they became recognized and exhibited in regular classes.

Health
he Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is basically a healthy dog who, given proper care and nourishment, will live a long and active life. All breeds, however, are susceptible to inherited disease and the Wheaten is no exception. Veterinary research has identified two possibly genetically transmitted conditions which seem to have a higher than normal incidence in Wheatens; protein-losing nephropathy (PLN) and protein-losing enteropathy (PLE). Addison's Disease also occurs and renal dysplasia (RD) which has been a serious problem among Wheatens in other countries and there have been some cases of the disease in the United States. The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of America, Inc. is sponsoring research into all of these conditions. Information about this can be found below.
