Briard Dog Breed Puppy Ads
AKA: Berger de Brie
Breed Group: Herding Group Height Male: 24-27 inches (62-68 kg.)
Breed Size: Medium Height Female: 22-25 inches (56-64 cm.)
Breed Origin: France Weight: 75 pounds (35 kg.)
Appearance
The most distinguishing feature of the Briard is at the end of the dog, and usually cannot be seen, it must be felt. There is a reason that the magazine for the Briard Club of America is called the Dewclaw. Unlike most breeds of dogs that have a single rear dewclaw, the Briard has double dewclaws (extra toes) on the rear legs. Ideally, these are low on the leg, actually functioning as toes. There are many theories as to why the breed has kept these, but no one really knows. Within the AKC, only the Great Pyrenees, the Beauceron, and the Briard are required to have them. Unlike the single dewclaws on many other breeds, these are actual bony appendages, and removal is painful and unnecessary. Lack of the double dewclaws is a disqualification in any country. It is the first thing a breeder checks as puppies are born. The front legs have the normal one dewclaw, which may be removed, although it is not common to do so.

Temperament
Gentle, loving, and devoted, the Briard is a dog that has bags of personality and is very independent. These loyal dogs are very devoted to their owners, and also very protective, making them very effective watchdogs. The Briard is a very intelligent dog with a lively and spirited disposition, but can also be serious and calm when he wants to be. These are dogs that will adapt well to their owners and will be happy to go along with whatever the owner wants to do, whether its to sit indoors or whether its to go and enjoy some play and exercise. The high intelligence of the Briard means that he needs to have mental stimulation in the activities that the owner provides for him to keep him keen, interested, and alert.

History
United States were imported by Thomas Jefferson to protect his sheep flock. The Briard was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1928 and is a member of its Herding Group.
