AKA:
Breed Group: Working Group Height Male: 26-29 inches
Breed Size: Giant Height Female: 26-29 inches
Breed Origin: Russia Weight: 85-140 pounds
Appearance
These large dogs are around 26-29 inches in height, and weigh in at around 85-140 pounds. The wiry, dense coat lies close to the skin and is slightly wavy. The coarse coat is also weatherproof. The coloring of the coat is black, and can also be black with white hairs mixed in. This is a handsome dog, and has a distinctive curtain of hair over his eyes and face. Robust and sturdy, the Black Russian Terrier boasts an alert expression.

Temperament
The Black Russian Terrier is a calm, confident, and courageous dog with a self-assurance which sometimes is rather aloof towards strangers. They are highly intelligent and extremely reliable. They were bred to guard and protect. The BRT requires human contact and is not a dog to be left outside. They want to be close to family members at all times and are very loyal companions. Obedience training and early and continued socialization are required in order to keep the breed from becoming overly protective. Because of their intelligence, they excel in Obedience and Agility competition, and other working dog sports.

The Black Russian Terrier will usually get on well with children, and can be fascinated by them, However, do remember that these dogs are large, and he may inadvertently knock down a smaller child in play. These dogs can be dominant around other dogs that are not part of the household, but are generally okay with other pets in the household. The protective nature of the Black Russian Terrier makes him a good watchdog, but means that he will often be wary around strangers. These dogs can learn quickly but can sometimes be a little slow when it comes to being mature! These dogs are well suited to confident dog owners that have plenty of time and attention to devote to their pet.
